A word from Lex 😄
Yesterday (02/16/2023), I had a technical assessment that had three simple JavaScript questions. I'll provide my answers below with basic explanations, however, today has again ran so long and I can't find the time to write out all of the pseudo code I wanted to so that other developers could see the thought process that goes behind answering a technical question. However, I will provide a resource for understanding that - it's Leon's PREP class!
Today, I had my behavioral interview, which I spent three hours preparing for!! I watched some videos that ended up not being directly about behavioral interviews, they were more about coffee chats/reaching out to professional devs, so I took notes and will be sharing that in a later blog post. I made sure to have prepared answers for the most common questions asked in interviews, and I rehearsed them a few times out loud so I could feel fluid in responding. I'll post them with my answers down below!
The interview went absolutely phenomenally and I had such a fun time talking to my interviewer - she highly praised my articulate and mindful communication style, and we even got to talk about music (she's an Ari Lennox, Tems, and SZA fan - she's definitely an emo lover girl at heart... she's just like me fr 😭). It was genuinely a fun interview and I did ask if I would be able to share information about the interview in my blogs - she's going to ask her manager and get back to me about it, so for now, I don't want to share too much in respect to her and her position! I will reveal that I was asked the typical questions like "tell me about yourself", "how did you hear about the position", "tell me about your favourite project that you worked on", etc... I'm super glad these were the questions, because luckily, I had just prepared answers for them and was absolutely ready to respond! I'm hoping I can do a little bit of a tea spill in the next few days here and talk about the other questions, and share with you all on how I answered them in the actual interview.
Other than that, my day has yet again been full of responding to LinkedIn messages and helping fellow devs with portfolio reviews, resume reviews, and just chatting in general 😊 I have to say, the more you put effort into building meaningful connections, the more you learn about active listening and how to provide considerate responses. Mindful communication is one of my biggest values; I try to improve on it every day. I don't think it's touched on nearly enough, but it's one of your biggest strengths when... well, talking to anyone, ever!! Mindful communication isn't just beneficial in interviews, it's important for fostering healthy relationships with every connection you have.
And the more you practice it, the easier it gets to listen, and the more articulate you will be with your responses!
Didn't get to code at all today, and its almost 8 PM as I'm wrapping this up, so I'm going to reward myself with some dinner, and then hop into Typescript land!🍴🍝👋

Notes today:
Here are the JS problems I was tasked with during my technical assessment; definitely felt like doing codewars challenges!

Here are some common interview questions I had prepared before the interview.
These questions and answers do not reflect what actually happened in the interview, as I cannot disclose that information at this time. I also asked many questions as that end of the interview, which were very specific to the company and role, so I also cannot disclose that for now. I hope to share the process in the future to help you all get a better understanding of how an interview goes, so that you can prepare yourselves real life experiences!
Tell me about yourself:
In my final two years at Stetson University, I was proud to serve my peers as a Biology and Writing TA while also conducting Wildlife Biology research in the field of Herpetology and Invasive Species. After receiving my Bachelors of Science in both Biology and Chemistry, I began applying to veterinary graduate school while working as a veterinary technician. However, I had taken up programming along the way and had never felt a passion like that before so right when I went to hit submit on those vet school apps, I made the commitment to join the 100Devs agency instead. For the last year with the 100Devs agency, I’ve been designing and developing web applications, staying up to date with the newest technologies, working alongside extremely dedicated and intelligent developers, and learning as much as I possibly can.
Outside of programming, I enjoy reading subjects like poetry and philosophy, I work on personal and community development, and I really spend most of my time helping other devs and learning new things.
How did you hear about this position?
I originally heard of XXX through a [Recruiter] named XXX. She had reached out to me about [ROLE] that value diversity, equity, and inclusion (three values that XXX company prides themselves on!), and I told her about my non-traditional, adverse background, and that I definitely advocated for similar values. She asked if I was looking for an opportunity and if I was interested in joining her. That’s when I started seeing XXX pop up on other connections pages on LinkedIn. Fellow 100Devs members had joined the XXX team and were documenting their journeys. After reaching out to [100Devs member], [100Devs member], and [100Devs member] and gaining some more insight about the [ROLE] role, I was interested in the opportunity for growth, so I applied!
What was 100Devs like?
100Devs was a wonderful agency to work with. Not only was I pushed to gain proficiency in new technologies in ways that were exciting and fun, but also, I was introduced to one of the most wonderful communities I’ve been blessed to be a part of. I built a great network of friends I hope to have for life; we’ve held code reviews 1-2x a week for the past year where we’ve been able to practice a range of skills including Git flow patterns, debugging, website responsiveness and accessibility, among many other topics. Though there was a lovely amount of collaboration throughout my time at 100Devs, there was also a significant amount of independence and self-motivation and reliability involved. Though challenging, it was very rewarding to end the program with over 30 different web applications built in all scopes of development: frontend, backend, and fullstack.
What do you know about XXX?
I understand that XXX's mission is to [MISSION]. XXX does this through [what they do]
